Ok, so I finally had the chance to get a glimpse of action from the unfamous Super Saiyan God
in DBZ Battle of Gods. The actual one. ***Warning, some spoilers and rants ahead***
Here's my two cents: what a disappointment.
I am a huge, great fan of Dragon Quest, specially Dragon Quest 8: The Journey of the cursed king.
Let me tell you: Goku looks exactly like Hero in Super high tension mode.
Purple-ish hair, red eyes, big glowing aura.
Also, it is really not very different from a Kaiohken.
No big surprise: Akira Toriyama is the Monster/Character designer for Dragon Quest Saga at Square Enix.
Prolly such a choice could have worked... if DQ8 never existed!
On the other hand I was expecting something...different.
Most people figured the God pretty much like a golden version of Ssj4, and I find it to be a little old and boring.
(Db Af anybody?) Nice eye candy, sure, but it is nothing new!
But I think pretty much everyone's agree with this following statement: Like it or not, it could have been better.
Whatever it may have looked like, everything is better than this form!
Remember that DBZ was inspired by "Journey to the west", and Goku's character itself by Sun Wukong, the Monkey God.
Well, Sun Wukong's design looked enough badass to me to get inspired... So what the hell Toriyama?!
One thing I know is that Toriyama tends to simplify ultimate forms...in Frieza's case, for example, works wonderfully.
Buu also turns into a kid version of his "former" self, and works well.
But Saiyans are quite different, and I don't really apreciate the choice. (REMEMBER: Dragon Quest 8 Super High Tension.)
It almost looks as Toriyama had no clue and just thought "Oh well, let's recycle some old designs. After all, it's for commercial sake!" Almost like they had the need to get rid of some old action figure stocks, and so they decided to sell them with a lame color pattern change!
(Believe me: it happened with Wreck it Ralph...they had the BALLS to paint some old Hulk toy hands!)
I would not like to talk about the "Way to become God", since it sounds a bit cheesy to me. But I must.
So basically it needs 6 pure of heart saiyans to become a God.
The idea of having a human as the 6th saiyan's incubator was pretty original, actually. Not bad, I admit it.
...But it looks like everyone can turn into a Super Saiyan God, as long as there are 6 saiyans.
Now, let's just ignore the fact that Vegeta is far from being Pure of heart...shouldn't this being an exclusive, doomoungously poweful form?
Even Vegeta complains this fact in the movie!
So, in a nutshell: I don't really liked it.
According to some rumors, the success of the movie might start a new 200 episodes series of DBZ!
The fan part of me is cheerful...but should this hypothetic new series turn into some commercial-totally-goku-centered-pudding, that would be a bigger disappointment.
I begun loving Dragonball for his values. Goku and Krillin bromance and great friendship, the teamwork, the journey with friends, the growth...please don't let it turn into a commercial puddle.
